MATEWAN HAS INTRIGUED VISITORS AND INSPIRED FOLKLORE FOR
OVER 100 YEARS. IN THE 1880S THE FEUD BETWEEN THE HATFIELDS
AND THE MCCOYS RAGED IN MATEWAN.
FORTY YEARS LATER, THE TOWN WAS THE SCENE OF A FATAL CONFLICT BETWEEN MINE
WORKERS AND COAL OPERATORS. THE CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED MOVIE MATEWAN, RELEASED IN 1987 BY FILMMAKER JOHN SAYLES BROUGHT
NATIONWIDE ATTENTION TO THE TOWNS STORY, PROMOTING UNDERSTANDING OF WVs PAST. LOCATED ON THE TUG FORK OF THE BIG SANDY RIVER,
MATEWAN WAS FOUNDED IN 1897 WHEN THE NORFOLK AND WESTERN RAILRAY ENTERED THE VALLEY TO OPEN THE
WILLIAMSON COALFIELD.

towards OAKWOOD RD.;
Travel approximately 1 hour & 20 minutes on US 119 South, then turn
LEFT onto WV-65 South.; Approximately 7 miles to Millstone Park
on your left.
From Huntington, WV
- Take Rt. 52 South to Naugatuck,
WV. Turn left onto Rt. 65
South and travel approximately 15 miles to Millstone Park
which will be on your left. Watch for signs.

will be the Passion Trail "The Footsteps of Jesus" 40 stories
with 132 scenes of the life of Jesus. FREE to the public. 1/2 mile walk with over 120 candlelights

between Man and Gilbert. In 57 nights, 12,320 have walked this trail. 25-40
cast members have performed 122 times. The GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD. You'll
